Is There Any Value to Having Lots of Squidoo Points?

Is There Really Any Value to Having Lots of Squidoo Points?

Yes, friends.  There is some value to Squidoo points, and I certainly wouldn’t discourage anyone from building them.
The real value of playing Squidoo points comes from the push it gives you to go out and interact with others in the Squidoo community.

Squidoo points have worth in the sense that gaining points allows you to advance to higher Squidoo levels.

Gaining levels opens up new background themes and makes additional widgets available to you over time.

The higher your level on Squidoo,  the more prominent your presence is on the site.  These things are nice, but only carry a certain “value”.

The true value of Squidoo points is that points are a barometer of the writer’s experience on Squidoo.

Here’s how it works.

Squidoo uses a gaming approach to entice both Squidoo writers and Squidoo readers to stay active on the site.

Readers who are members of Squidoo earn points by reading articles on the website and “Squid liking” those that appeal to them.  Read several in a row, and the site might even reward you for extra points.

Comment on a Squidoo lens, and you’ll earn points.

Want to earn tons of points quickly?  Take Squidoo quizzes or participate in Squidoo polls.  This is the fastest way for reader members to earn points.

But reading articles on Squidoo is not just for non-writers!  Writers gain tremendously by visiting other lensmasters’ work.  You’ll not only gain insight on article subject matters, but you’ll get to see how other writers are presenting their work.

Writers gain points in many ways.  First and foremost, you gain points every time you publish a new article.

Writers gain points for introductions that contain images.

Writers gain points for using an Amazon module to showcase a product in your story.

Writers gain points for participating in Squidoo Quests, which include writing an article about a specific subject, or reading a short explanation of a new Squidoo policy.

These points all add up.

What do they add up to?  Points add up to trophies and higher levels.  Higher levels open doors to more gadgets and Squidoo prizes such as Lens of the Day (LOTD), opportunity to serve as a Squidoo Angel, and more.

How high can you go?  Go all the way to Level 80!*

It’s a long haul, but Squidoo makes it a lot of fun along the way, and you’ll be surprised at how many online friends you make along the way.

How Do People Make Money on Squidoo?

How Do People Make Money on Squidoo?

How Does One Get Paid on Squidoo?

Today I want to give you a short explanation to the two most-asked questions about Squidoo.

They are “how do people make money on Squidoo?” and “how does one get paid on Squidoo?”

Basically, friends, there are two ways to make money on Squidoo:

# 1 - Lens Rank

The first way to earn money on Squidoo is to create unique articles that get lots of visitors thus giving your article a high lens ranking.  Each article is ranked individually on Squidoo.  Your lower ranked work doesn’t affect higher ranked lenses.  Each lens stands on its own.

Squidoo assigns lens rank as follows.  All articles (lenses) are ranked each day.

Only lenses that have been published on Squidoo for the entire month will be considered. Good reason to publish your article by the last day of the month, instead of the first day of the following month!

Here are the Squidoo Payment Tiers:

Tier One

A Tier One lens is an article which was on Squidoo on the first on the month.  It’s one where the monthly average is roughly in the top 2,000 lenses.  Tier One lenses represent the best or rather most-visited 2,000 lenses on the Squidoo site.

Typically the monthly payout for a Tier One lens is approximately $40.00.

Tier Two

Tier Two articles represent the monthly rank averages of roughly lenses 2001 through rank 10,000.
Typical monthly payout for Tier Two lenses is around $6.00 each.

Tier Three

Tier Three represents the next 75,000 lenses—roughly speaking average monthly lens rank of 10,001 through lens rank 85,000.

Typical payout for an article in this group is around 40 cents.

Exception to Tier 1 thru 3

There are times when lenses have that are average ranked numbers 90,000 to 100,000 earn a few cents each month.   Typical monthly payout from this group will usually be only five to ten cents per article.  Revenue here is typically from the lens’ text ads.

Revenue for Tier 1 thru Tier 3 is Made through Advertising

The income made from advertising such as Google’s Adsense (and others) are pooled together in Squidoo’s Ad Pool.  Squidoo takes half of the funds.  The rest is pooled out to those lenses with the best average lens rank each month in a formula broken down by Tier.

The other source of advertising revenue you can receive is from Text Ads.  An example of text ads can be seen when you move your mouse over a word in an article that is highlighted with double green lines.  You receive revenue when a reader hovers over this ad in your article.

Revenue is Traffic-Based

The payouts I’ve listed are generalizations.  Keep in mind that the funds in Squidoo’s Ad Pool are determined by the amount of traffic the site’s received for the month of the payout.  If traffic goes down, revenue goes down—and the amount to be shared among the parties will be lower.  If traffic surges, ad pool revenues go higher and everybody wins.

Other Factors that Might Contribute to Lens Rank

Qualities that contribute to lens rank include recent traffic to the lens (within the last two weeks), how recently you updated your article, and click-outs.

Some people say that recent sales, Squid-likes, and Squid Angel Blessings may play a role.  These are somewhat debatable.

# 2 – Affiliate Sales / Commissions

The second way to make money on Squidoo is through product placement and earning sales commissions from affiliates Amazon and Ebay.

By adding a sales module to your article, you can highlight related products and earn commission when your reader decides to purchase from your lens.

Squidoo will take 50% of your earned commission but Squidoo earns higher commission rates due to volume.  On Amazon, commission on Squidoo is 8% (which you’ll receive 4%) which is comparable to what new Amazon associates with no sales history receive on their own.

The Key to Success

By now, you’ve noted that you can earn SOME money on Squidoo, but as a reader these amounts may look a tad pitiful.  To make any sort of income on Squidoo two things have to happen.

First, you have to build up a large quantity of work where a most articles are capable of earning at least some revenue.

Second, you have to give your work time to build up visitors.

If you have the time available to do both of these steps, you can make money on Squidoo.

When Is Pay Day on Squidoo?

You will receive your Squidoo payout via Paypal two months AFTER a lens has earned income.  That means if you earned income on a lens in March, you’ll be paid in May.

Pay Day is on the 15th of each month.  Both Squidoo and Paypal send notifications via email to alert you of a payment, so you’ll have no reason not to know you’ve been paid.
